Royal British Legion and River Network Forge Strategic Partnership to Tackle Urgent Veteran Housing Crisis in Derbyshire

James Stafford DL, County Chair of the Royal British Legion (RBL) Derbyshire, and Terry Eckersley, CEO of River Network Charity, have formally met to establish a vital new strategic collaboration aimed at expanding supported housing and essential welfare services for veterans across the region.
This critical partnership comes at a pivotal moment. The demand for high-quality, dedicated veteran accommodation in Derbyshire has reached an urgent peak as ex-service personnel increasingly face complex barriers when transitioning to civilian life. Many battle post-traumatic stress, physical service injuries, and sudden social isolation, requiring specialist care that standard social housing pathways simply cannot provide.
Compounding these challenges is Derbyshire’s ongoing Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). As local administrative structures shift and transition, there is a heightened risk that vulnerable ex-service personnel will slip through the systemic cracks. In response, River Network is rapidly accelerating its regional expansion, scaling up its turnkey operational capabilities to protect frontline services and deliver immediate, localized housing solutions.
Terry Eckersley, CEO of River Network, commented:

The collaboration unites two influential figures in Derbyshire’s civic and voluntary sectors. James Stafford DL, alongside his leadership of the RBL Derbyshire, serves the county as a Deputy Lieutenant, using his office to champion community unity, charitable networks, and uniformed youth groups. Under his guidance, the RBL Derbyshire has become an agile, highly impactful hub for veteran care and outreach. River Network, led by Eckersley, has simultaneously emerged as an agile grassroots force, recently mobilising 80 community development workers to rapidly scale up youth hubs, food banks, and supported living provisions across the county.
Together, the two organizations are building a unified, robust framework to ensure that Derbyshire’s veterans receive the safe, stable homes and wrap-around welfare support they earned through their service.
